As the cold winter weather approaches, it’s time to prep your home for the winter season. From getting your plumbing system serviced to winterizing your well pump, there are many tasks you’ll need to consider. We’re going to share some tips to ensure you winterize your well pump correctly this year.
Why Does It Need Winterized?
It’s common knowledge that water expands when it freezes. When you think about water in your well pump, that expansion could cause damage to its casing and other internal components as the now-frozen water pushes outward to expand. Winterizing your pump helps to ensure the water in the pump doesn’t freeze and cause any damage.
Below-Ground vs. Above-Ground Well Pumps
It’s important to realize that not all well pumps will need to undergo winterization. Pumps that remain submerged below ground are not likely to freeze because they’re below the frost line. However, above-ground well pumps, known commonly as jet pumps, are particularly susceptible to freezing and should undergo winterization for their overall safety.
How to Winterize Your Well Pump
Start by shutting off the pump to protect yourself from any electrical harm. Next, you’ll want to turn on the lowest faucet in your home to drain out any excess water in your lines as well as lower the overall water pressure. You’ll want to disconnect the drainpipes at the pump and blow out any leftover water with an air compressor.
Lastly, you’ll want to pour an antifreeze solution into your pump to prevent freezing any water residue. Be sure to use safe food-grade propylene glycol antifreeze. You never want to use car antifreeze in your well pump, as it can affect the quality of your drinking water when you go to use the pump again.
